                    The Baiji River Dolphin(白鳍豚)

   Population numbers don’t always go up. Sometimes they go down. (A) This is the story of Baiji River Dolphin that makes its home in the Changjiang River. Over 20 million years ago, the Baiji River Dolphin left the ocean, swam up the Changjiang and has lived there ever since. They have smaller eyes than other dolphins because the Changjiang has many small pieces of earth in it. Instead, this dolphin uses echolocation which is sound waves that hit something and go back to tell the dolphin to show it where the food is. This is one thing that makes this dolphin so unusual.

   About 200 B.C, there were some stories told of thousands of dolphins in the Changjiang River. But today, not many people see the dolphins. Their population has gone from thousands to about 150. (C)Scientists say that the dolphin population has gone down because the population of the people living on the Changjiang has gone up. They also say that the new dam on the river is also making the dolphin die because it doesn’t have enough of the river now to find food in.
