 NEVERbeforehasthewholeworldbeensounitedinthefaceofdang...

More than 190 countries participated in the United Nations Climate Change Conference held in Paris, France, from Nov 30 to Dec 11. They tried to reach a binding agreement on reducing greenhouse gas emissions (排放), also known as carbon emissions, after 2020. The gases, such as CO2, are mainly responsible for climate change.

As the biggest developing country in the world, China was not absent. It has promised to reach peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 or sooner, reduce its carbon emissions per unit of GDP by 60-65 percent from the 2005 level by 2030 and increase the share of non-fossil (非化石的) fuels in its primary energy to 20 percent by is a sign that China “has changed from a passive participant to an active builder”, commented China Daily.

As a large producer of greenhouse gases, China was on a path of carbon-intensive (高碳的) development for a long time. But over the past few years, China has tried to change to sustainable development.

China introduced its cleaner energy model in 2007, calling it the “ecological civilization” plan. This model was made into a concrete goal for the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020).

“For China, moving to a low-carbon economy and reaching its goals is a must. There is no plan B,” Zou Ji, a professor at the Nationai Center for Climate Change Strategy, told China Daily.

To make the change, China has been developing new energy sources.

In 2014, it spent around $115 billion (724.5 billion yuan) on solar and wind power and other kinds of renewable energy, putting it far ahead of the European Union and the United States for investment. Last year saw China’s use of coal go down for the first time.

The change isn’t only happening at government level. Ordinary people have also become more aware of the need to protect the environment and control climate change.

Last year the first report on Chinese people’s awareness of ecological civilization was released by the Ministry of Environmental Protection. The report showed that people’s awareness of smog (雾霾), biodiversity (生物多样*) and environmental protection laws were all above 80 percent.

Every day, environmentally friendly behaviors, such as using paper or reusable shopping bags instead of plastic ones, have also become routine for many people.

“This growing public concern has led the government to introduce more ambitious policies,” Janos Pasztor, the UN’s assistant secretary-general on climate change, told China Daily. “But we will need action from all parts of society, including government, businesses and the public, to build a truly sustainable future.”
