Oneafternoon,myhusbandtookourtwoboysshopping.IknewwhyIw...

One afternoon, my husband took our two boys shopping. I knew why I was not invited because Mother's Day was coming. The outing didn't last long but everyone came home smiling. My husband said he was proud of their choice.

Mother's Day came and the boys couldn't wait to give me my gift. Laughing from ear and ear, they brought the gift into my room. My curiosity increased as the wrapped gift gave no clues to its content. At their request, I opened the gift they were excited about. There it was: a can of bug spray (杀虫剂). Bug spray? Not yet understanding the meaning, I said the usual “Wow” and “thank you”. Since I found this surprise funny, it was easy to laugh and cheer along with my children. It wasn't until my youngest said, “so you can kill the spiders yourself”, that I understood this was a wellthoughtout gift.

My true has always been spiders. I can handle all the things other in our daytoday lives — just not spiders. We'd recently had a spider incident in my bedroom. The spider was so huge that I couldn't get close enough to hit it with anything. My husband, working abroad, was seldom at home, so the children usually rescued me from all spiders. But that evening they won't go near it either because of its size. This incident ended with me sleeping in the living room for a week (even the spider was dead and gone).

I applaud my husband for allowing our children to buy what they want, instead of what he suggested. I think the gift was one of my most memorable parental successes. The success was not that they wanted to buy me a gift. It was that my children taught me the true meaning of the gift — giving from the heart.
