You can’t escape the message that smoking is bad for you. But what if your dad smokes? You might be worried about his health, sick of smelling the smoke, or even a little embarrassed by it.

You can’t order your dad to stop smoking, but you can encourage him to do it. There are lots of good reasons. Here are some you can mention:

◆    Smoking will hurt his health.

◆    Smoking creates second-hand smoke, which you don’t like.

◆    Smoking will be made a habit for long that one cannot get rid of easily.

But what if your dad gets angry with you for bringing up the topic of smoking? People don’t like to be reminded that they are doing something wrong. So it’s possible your dad will be angry, especially if he’s worried he won’t be able to give up smoking. Maybe he has tried before and failed.

Remember to be kind and respectful when you discuss smoking with your dad. Also remember that it is difficult to give up smoking. Some people try several times before they’re able to give it up for good. Instead of shouting at him, tell him that you love him and want him to enjoy many healthy years ahead. In time, your dad may realize you are right about smoking.

And if he does agree to stop smoking, be his biggest supporter. Ask if there’s anything you can do to help when he feels that he really wants to smoke. Maybe you could take a walk, go to the movies, or listen to music together. As he reaches a milestone, such as a month without smoking, be sure to celebrate the big thing. Way to go, Dad!
